Hermann Hesse · 1981 · 90 pages
Hermann HESSE (1877 - 1962),
Translator: Gunther Olesch, Anke Dreher, Amy Coulter, Stefan Langer and Semyon Chaichenets
Siddhartha is one of the great philosophical novels. Profoundly insightful, it is also a beautifully written story that begins as Siddhartha, son of an Indian Brahman, leaves his family and begins a lifelong journey towards Enlightenment. On the way he faces the entire range of human experience and emotion: he lives with ascetics, meets Gotama the Buddha, learns the art of love from Kamala the courtesan, and is transformed by the simple philosophy of the ferryman Vasudeva whose wisdom comes not from learned teachings but from observing the River. Herman Hesse (1877-1962) was a German-Swiss novelist, poet, and painter. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946.

“@msuster @kalvepuri @orangebook_ Excited for you, Mark. Siddhartha is one of two books I’ve lived my life by since I read 20 years ago!”↗

Amanda Palmer
“Siddhartha changed my life. i named my first cat govinda when i was 15 because of that damn book. steppenwolf changed me more, though. there is nothing in the world like that book, nothing.”↗

Hugh Jackman
“I was given this book as I was going off to drama school. Acting, to me, was the most potent way to find out who you were and what life was about, and this book—about a young man who follows the rules but questions what is true, not for his father or for the community but what is true for himself—confirmed that, yes, I’m on the right path. Siddhartha’s quest is a reminder that we always have to find our own truth. I’m a bit of a zealot about this book—I’ve probably given away about 100 copies.”↗
Navdeep Chandel
“It’s a nice book about a journey of an evolution of a young man into an adult.”↗

Jason Segel
“I read Siddhartha in high school, and I carry a copy with me whenever I travel. I responded to the twists and turns of the Buddha’s journey, of trying out a million different ways to live, and the very human story of an enlightened figure.”↗

Brie Larson
“You can read it at every stage of your life and there’ll always be something there for you.”↗
