A Sport and a Pastime

Philip Dean, a gifted Yale dropout, has an affair with a girl in a small French town in the 1950s. His compatriot, with whom he is staying, imagines their relationship in detail. As the narrator's reality recedes, so his fantasy of the relationship becomes hauntingly, overwhelmingly real.
